Georgian national choreography

Georgian national choreography has centuries old history. During its development process originated theatrical Georgian dance. Predecessor of Georgian national choreography might be hunters dancing, ritual round dance in honour of deity of fertility moon - “Shushpar”. With time into the dancing of the pristine hunter appear rhythmic, gymnastic elements, later on, it gets martial temper, such was conceived dancing- pantomimic manner – widely known dance “Khorumi”. Big role in establishment of Georgian women choreography had the dance “Samaia” – origins of which go to depths of paganism, following to family celebrations for the sake of birth of first-born sun. Transition to agriculture and stock-raising engender new rites with ritual dancing of mysterious character – “Melia-telepia”, “Perkhuli-oskhapue”, and others. Agrarian masquerade “Berikaoba” devoted to forces of nature. Also, from ancient times there were pair’s dances, also related to fertility cult. The oldest from the ancient dances of pairs with romantic connotation, which has reached to our days, is the summit of Georgian folk choreography – dance “Kartuli”, (also known as a “Sadarbazo”, “Sanadimo”, “Saarshiko”, “Davluri”, “Lekuri”)

Dancing elements together with elements of rituals from rites and festive gatherings, form common games and sport, have determined process of formation of dances such as: “Kartuli, Khorumi, Samaia, Mtiuluri, etc.”. Famous Georgian dance ensembles are : “State academic folk dance ensemble of Georgia” “Georgian State ensemble of singing and dance”, “Georgian State ensemble of singing and dance-Rustavi”, “State academic ensemble - Erisioni” and others.
