Every region of Georgia has its own character — the vibrant capital, the seaside resort on the Black Sea, the wild mountain peaks, the wine valley and the cliff monasteries. Here I take you along the most beautiful places.
Hoofdstad · თბილისი
Tbilisi is een stad die je niet zomaar vergeet. De oude stad — met zijn zwavelbaden, houten balkons en slingerende straatjes — ademt eeuwen geschiedenis. Vlak naast ruïnes en middeleeuwse kerken vind je hippe cafés, galeries en een bloeiende kunstscene. Tbilisi is tegelijk oud en springlevend.
Tbilisi is a city you don't easily forget. The old town — with its sulphur baths, wooden balconies and winding streets — breathes centuries of history. Right next to ruins and medieval churches you find hip cafés, galleries and a thriving arts scene. Tbilisi is simultaneously ancient and very much alive.
Zwarte Zeekust · ბათუმი
Batumi is Georgië's kosmopolitische havenstad aan de Zwarte Zee. Het subtropische klimaat, de promenade, het moderne stadssilhouet en de palmbomen geven de stad een heel andere sfeer dan de rest van het land. Batumi ademt openheid, verandering en zeelucht.
Batumi is Georgia's cosmopolitan port city on the Black Sea. The subtropical climate, the promenade, the modern city skyline and the palm trees give the city a very different atmosphere from the rest of the country. Batumi breathes openness, change and sea air.

De Gergeti Trinity Church — hoog op een rots boven het plaatsje Stepantsminda, met de ijsberg Kazbegi als achtergrond — is misschien wel het meest iconische beeld van Georgië. Dit is de Kaukasus op zijn indrukwekkendst: wild, hoog en adembenemend mooi.
The Gergeti Trinity Church — high on a rock above the village of Stepantsminda, with the glacial Mount Kazbegi as a backdrop — may be the most iconic image of Georgia. This is the Caucasus at its most impressive: wild, high and breathtakingly beautiful.

Svaneti is Georgië's mystieke bergwereld — geïsoleerde dorpen met middeleeuws uitziende wachttorens, eeuwige gletsjers en een cultuur die nauwelijks veranderd is in honderden jaren. Mestia is het hart van Svaneti, omgeven door toppen boven de 4.000 meter.
Svaneti is Georgia's mystical mountain world — isolated villages with medieval-looking watchtowers, eternal glaciers and a culture that has barely changed in hundreds of years. Mestia is the heart of Svaneti, surrounded by peaks above 4,000 metres.
Wijnregio · კახეთი
Kakheti is de wijnregio van Georgië — glooiende heuvels vol wijngaarden, kloosters en karakteristieke marani (wijnkelders). In de herfst kleuren de wijngaarden goud en oranje; de lucht ruikt naar most en gerijpte vruchten. Hier wordt Georgische wijn geboren.
Kakheti is the wine region of Georgia — rolling hills full of vineyards, monasteries and characteristic marani (wine cellars). In autumn the vineyards turn gold and orange; the air smells of must and ripened fruit. This is where Georgian wine is born.
Rotsstad · ვარძია
Vardzia is een rotsstad uitgehouwen in een klif — een complex van meer dan 3.000 kamers, gangen en kapellen, gebouwd in de 12e en 13e eeuw onder koningin Tamar. Het beslaat 40.000 m² en was ooit thuis aan duizenden monniken. Tot op de dag van vandaag is een deel nog in gebruik als actief klooster.
Vardzia is a cliff city carved into a rock face — a complex of more than 3,000 rooms, tunnels and chapels, built in the 12th and 13th centuries under Queen Tamar. It covers 40,000 m² and was once home to thousands of monks. To this day part of it remains in use as an active monastery.

Mtskheta — de heilige stad, vroegere hoofdstad van Georgië, met de Jvari-kerk en de Svetitskhoveli-kathedraal als UNESCO-monumenten. Ananuri — een sprookjesachtig kasteelcomplex aan de Aragvi-rivier, weerspiegeld in het turkooizen meer ernaast. Racha — een onontdekte, stille bergvallei, groen en rustig, ver weg van toeristendrukte.
Mtskheta — the holy city, former capital of Georgia, with the Jvari church and Svetitskhoveli cathedral as UNESCO monuments. Ananuri — a fairytale castle complex on the Aragvi river, reflected in the turquoise lake beside it. Racha — an undiscovered, quiet mountain valley, green and peaceful, far from tourist crowds.
